Why Does a Production Team Notice Things Others May Miss?

Labuan Bajo Productions is not a boat charter operator. We work on boats booked by clients through different operators, which gives us a different point of view from regular guests.

We do not only see boats when they are freshly prepared for arriving guests. We also see them during production days, after a trip has ended, and while they are being prepared for the next group. When filming in 4K, small details that may not show up in photos often become much more noticeable.

Faded paint, worn sofas, noisy cabin doors, air conditioning that is not working at its best, or crew members struggling to keep up with guest needs can all show up clearly in the final footage.

Based on notes from more than 40 charters, here are a few things you can check before paying a boat deposit.

• Who Owns the Boat?
  Find out whether the operator actually owns and manages the boat, or whether they are acting as an intermediary for another boat owner.
• Clear Pricing
  Transparent operators usually list their prices, or at least a price range, on their official website. If pricing and facility details are only shared through chat, make sure you ask for a written breakdown before paying a deposit.
• Guest Reviews
  Check both the number and quality of reviews on Google and TripAdvisor. A sufficient number of reviews on independent platforms can help you see common patterns in guest experiences.
• Independent Recognition
  Awards such as TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice can be one helpful sign, especially when they are supported by consistent reviews and a solid track record.
• Crew Numbers and Service
  A luxury boat is not only about the interior. There should be enough crew members for the number of guests, especially for private trips, events, or photo and video productions.

Price Can Also Tell You Something

Price can be one factor to consider, but it should always be compared alongside the facilities, guest capacity, number of crew members, boat age, and service details.

According to a Market Report published by the related group, the median charter price in Komodo is USD 7,150 per night. The data includes 61 boats with publicly listed prices out of 179 boats surveyed.

A lower price does not automatically mean a bad experience. However, if a price is much lower than other boats with a similar route and duration, it is worth checking exactly what is included. Look at the number of crew members, cabins, meals, tender service, and safety equipment. The facilities or service standard may simply be different from what you need for a premium private charter.

The same data also shows a median booking lead time of 74 days before departure, based on 1,063 bookings. Well-maintained boats with good service are often booked earlier, especially during holiday periods.

The Difference When an Operator Owns the Boat

From our experience, boats that are owned and directly managed by the operator tend to have more consistent standards. The operator is directly responsible for the boat’s maintenance, crew, equipment, and overall guest experience.
